What is a “Lyric Video”?

Lyric videos are music videos that primarily showcase the song's lyrics on screen as they are sung. While often more budget-friendly than traditional music videos, making them a popular choice for independent artists, lyric videos are also utilized by established musicians as part of their promotional strategies.

These videos range from simple text overlays with basic effects to more elaborate productions incorporating animation, live-action footage, or even visual metaphors. They serve a multifaceted purpose, aiding viewers in learning the lyrics, enhancing the listening experience, and effectively promoting new or existing songs.

Why some artists released lyric video rather than music video?

Lyric videos have emerged as a popular and accessible alternative to traditional music videos. Their affordability and relative ease of production make them attractive to both independent and established artists. While traditional music videos often require significant time and financial investment in elaborate sets, costumes, and professional filming, lyric videos can be created with minimal resources, relying primarily on creative editing and compelling visual presentations.

This accessibility has democratized music video production, empowering artists to share their work more readily. However, this is not to diminish the artistic value of traditional music videos, which often represent meticulously crafted pieces of art, demanding significant time and effort from filmmakers, artists, and entire production teams.

Contrasting of fonts and shapes.

Belongs to the album “Tung Ngay Nhu Mai Mai” (Every Day Feels Like Forever) that has been released in December, 2024 by Bui Truong Linh, a young Vietnamese artist who debuted in 2019, the album quickly received a large amount of support across Viet Nam. “Vi Dieu Gi” (Because Of What) is the result of his collaboration with rapper Dang Rang To.

Different from most normal lyric video, the lyric in this video compacted into a small rectangle under the title circle motion. It also appears in a tackle and solid transition, whereas the title appears and disappears in a smooth and delegate way. The contract makes the video aesthetically pleasing, which is something Bui Truong Linh has been known for. However there’s a certain disadvantage to this is in exchange for visual, Bui Truong Linh sacrificed the easiness for audience to read the lyric.

Kidsai's song "GIAYPHUT" (Moment) is a mellow, introspective track with a catchy melody. It blends elements of pop and R&B, creating a dreamy and somewhat melancholic atmosphere. It features Kidsai's smooth vocals and often includes a collaboration with another artist, Niz, adding another layer to the song's emotional depth.

This music video in 2023 perfectly depicted how a simple yet straightforward lyric video should looks like. With the decoration being put aside and the frame for lyric consumed 2/3 of the area. Choosing a bold font with big size, kidsai allows audience to carefully read his lyric. This might or might not has to do with his style of music (New Waves, a type of music that make hearing the lyric extremely hard without reading the subtitle.).
