I. Definition
Media code consists of many things, mostly related to the cinema aspect such as editing, acting, mise-en-scene, sounds, etc - all of them can be combined into one table with four columns:

As I have already mentioned symbolic codes, technical codes, and conventions before in my Genre Research and Idea Development - both can be found on my blog. The only aspect I haven’t researched much about is written codes, especially spoken language. Which I will improvise on today. This will be director commentary, with me, Doxcease, breaking down the opening scene of Name of Hearts from different technical and symbolic aspects, thus explaining how NOH uses and challenges conventions in the romance genre.
II. CODE AND CONVENTION IN “NAMES OF HEARTS”
Romance movies, though constantly evolving, rely on a set of codes and conventions that create a familiar and comforting experience for viewers.

Narrative Codes:
- The "Boy Meets Girl" Formula: This classic structure sets the stage for the central romance. The protagonist meets their love interest, and obstacles prevent their relationship from blossoming.
- Overcoming Obstacles: The couple faces challenges, internal or external, that test their love and commitment. These obstacles can be societal pressures, personal demons, or misunderstandings.
Genre Conventions:
- Symbolism and Visual Language: The use of color palettes, music, and specific settings can create a romantic atmosphere. Soft lighting, warm colors, and swelling music often accompany emotional moments.
- Soulmates or Destiny: The narrative suggests the couple is destined to be together, hinting at an undeniable connection that transcends circumstance.
- Stock Characters: While not always present, certain character archetypes can appear. These might include the best friend who offers support, the rival vying for the protagonist's affection, or the wise elder who offers guidance.

Modern Variations:
- Subverting Tropes: While core elements remain, some films play with expectations. The "damsel in distress" trope might be replaced with a strong female lead, or the happily ever after might be redefined.
- Focus on Relationships: Beyond the central romance, some films explore the complexities of family dynamics, friendships, or self-discovery within the romantic narrative.
